To understand what makes microGAFFER special, you need to know what a "gaffer" is. A gaffer, sometimes called the Chief Lighting Technician (CLT), is in charge of all of the electrical and lighting requirements on a film set or theater stage. The gaffer directs electricians and other workers on the set to place all of the lighting equipment. The cords and cables are secured in place with gaffer's tape.

Gaffer tape is a strong, tough, cloth tape with strong adhesive properties. It is used in theatre, film and television productions as well as during live performances and any other kind of stage work. For a strong tape, however, gaffer tape is easy to tear by hand, which makes it easy to apply because no special cutting tools or dispensers are required. While related to duct tape, it differs in that it can be removed cleanly because it uses a synthetic petroleum-based adhesive rather than a natural rubber adhesive.

Gaffer tape is a wonderful thing; it's used all over any film or television set, theater stage, and on location. The only problem is, it's big and heavy.
